The Seven Hills of Rome

The Seven Hills of Rome are a group of hills on which the ancient city of Rome was built. They are an integral part of the city’s history and mythology.

The hills were initially occupied by separate settlements that began to form a cohesive community. The valleys between the hills were eventually drained, creating spaces for markets and public areas (fora).

In the past, the hills provided natural defensive positions and the location along the Tiber River provided strategic advantages.

Historical and Cultural Significance

  • Aventine Hill: Known for its ancient character, initially popular among the plebeians. Later included in the Servian Wall and home to temples and patrician families.
  • Caelian Hill: Known for luxurious residences and temples, later became a site for Christian churches and monasteries.
  • Capitoline Hill: The political and religious heart of Rome, housed important temples and the Roman government. Now a museum area and the main seat of the municipality.
  • Esquiline Hill: Initially a burial ground, later a fashionable residential area known for its gardens and villas.
  • Palatine Hill: The legendary founding site of Rome, became the location of imperial palaces and an elite residential area.
  • Quirinal Hill: Originally home to temples, later an elite residential area. Now the site of the official residence of the President of Italy.
  • Viminal Hill: The smallest of the seven hills, primarily residential, now the location of the Ministry of the Interior.

Mythology and Religion

Roman mythology closely associates these hills with religious practices. According to legend, Romulus and Remus founded Rome on the Palatine Hill in 753 BC.
